It is a 100th birthday party in a well-to-do postcode of Sao Paulo, where the house of our journalist host – he and another writer pal are actually each turning 50 – slips graciously down a slope to a terrace and the chatter is nearly all politics. Then the DJ cuts the music in the middle of a samba everyone knows. They reflexively fill in: "Ò coisinha tão bonitinha do papai" – "Oh daddy's beautiful little thing".

Not everything in Brazil is beautiful. Not the slums, or favelas, which ring cities like this one or Rio de Janeiro, or last Saturday's national glee when Argentina – neighbour and perennial rival – crashed out of the World Cup one day after the Brazilian squad's humiliating Dutch demise. ("Que desgraca!" squealed an old man when the stricken face of Diego Maradona filled the TVs in a bar on Sao Paulo's Teodoro Street.)

Yet you cannot spend a day in Brazil without sensing the economic miracles happening here – first quarter growth touched 9 per cent and the helicopter pads atop the skyscrapers of Sao Paulo are buzzing with air traffic again – or hearing of the achievements of its President, Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, recently named the world's most influential leader by Time Magazine, in raising the country's profile on the world stage and lifting much of the population out of poverty. The somewhat lefty party-goers were not actually thinking of Lula and Brazil as they sang about daddy and his baby, but they could have been.

The legacy of President Lula, a former lathe operator, is a conversation point if only because the race to succeed him kicks off this week. The constitution bars him running for a third term. While his hand-picked successor in the ruling Workers' Party, Dilma Rousseff, is an electoral virgin (she was his chief-of-staff), polls suggest she will prevail on election day in early October, thwarting the hopes of conservative opposition leader José Serra, a respected former governor of Sao Paulo state.

Brazil: Air France jet lands after bomb threat


AVIÃO DA AIR FRANCE É OBRIGADO A POUSAR DEPOIS DE AMEAÇA DE BOMBA.


RIO DE JANEIRO — An Air France passenger jet headed from Rio to Paris made an emergency landing in northeastern Brazil Saturday night due to a bomb threat.

All 405 passengers and 18 crew members were safely evacuated from Air France Flight 443, said Jorge Andrade, a spokesman for airport authority Infraero.

Recife international airport was closed for about 30 minutes but reopened after officials isolated the jet, he added.

Solange Argenta, an Infraero spokeswoman at the Recife airport, said authorities were examining the jet to determine if the threat was real.

"They're still inspecting the aircraft. It is possible that it could be cleared and resume its flight tonight," Argenta said.

Argenta said the threat was phoned in to the Rio airport after the flight took off at 4:20 p.m. (3:20 p.m. EDT; 1920 GMT). The plane landed in Recife at 7:53 p.m. (6:53 p.m. EDT; 2253 GMT).

Flight 443 was on the same route as an Air France jet that crashed last June off Brazil's northeastern coast, killing all 228 on board. While no definite cause has been determined in the crash, authorities have repeatedly ruled out foul play.

OS NEODEFENSORES DA LIBERDADE DE IMPRENSA

REPRODUZO ÓTIMO TEXTO ENCONTRADO NO BLOG "COM TEXTO LIVRE"

O relacionamento da grande imprensa com o Serra beira o sado-masoquismo.É impressionante como os grandes órgãos da imprensa brasileira são capazes de conviver com os arroubos autoritários do ex-governador sem os criticar, e ainda os ignorar.

Todas as críticas que foram dirigidas ao Governo Federal quando resolveu lançar a TV Brasil foram baseadas na premissa de que o “aparelhamento” do PT no governo iria produzir uma televisão chapa-branca, cuja programação e linha editorial seriam controladas pelos radicais do partido. O tempo serviu para mostrar que a TV Brasil é muito menos suscetível à interferência política do que a TV Cultura, cuja administração é nomeada pelo governo do Estado de São Paulo, e onde atitudes arbitrárias não são combatidas pela máquina corporativa das associações de imprensa, como a Abert por exemplo.

Os editoriais dos jornalões e perguntas insistentes de seus jornalistas se apegam em interpretações enviesadas do significado de controle social de mídia, distorcendo a intenção original de criar mecanismos para melhoria do nível do conteúdo de programas de televisão por parte de setores organizados da sociedade civil, confundindo deliberadamente com tentativa de cercear a liberdade de imprensa, mote que atualmente tem servido de escora para a manutenção de privilégios de imunidade para mentir e caluniar impunemente.

Ao mesmo tempo em que tentam sepultar qualquer tentativa de modificação que represente perda de seus privilégios, mesmo que estes sejam imorais, os neodefensores da liberdade de imprensa – que trabalham para empresas que durante a ditadura militar deram sustentação a um regime que fechou jornais e perseguiu, torturou e matou colegas de profissão – se calam diante da postura autoritária de José Serra, que manda demitir jornalistas que se atrevam a tratar de assuntos que sejam considerados como pontos frágeis de sua administração.

O autoritarismo de Serra e sua intolerância ao contraditório estão presentes nas repostas deselegantes até contra profissionais que devotam fidelidade ao seu projeto de poder. Serra é capaz de ligar para um dono de jornal pedindo a cabeça de um jornalista que o contrariou, imagine o que ele não pode fazer aonde mantém controle direto, como a direção da TV Cultura, que está na mão do seu vice, que o sucedeu.

Soa hipócrita uma defesa pretensamente apaixonada da liberdade imprensa contra o que teoricamente para eles poderia ser risco no futuro, quando ignoram evidências no presente.

A preocupação da velha mídia com o futuro da liberdade de imprensa exclui os funcionários da TV Cultura. Por lá, não tem problema se jornalistas são demitidos por interpelarem com “assunto indesejado” o candidato apoiado pelo governo ou por elaborarem reportagens mostrando as fraquezas da administração, mesmo que estes profissionais tenham sempre sido “leais” à linha editorial ditada por pessoas de confiança do governo do estado de São Paulo.

Neste caso, o silêncio dos hipócritas é ensurdecedor

Qual delas é a verdadeira  imagem da Marina?

  Lendo post do blog Os Amigos do Presidente Lula (http://osamigosdopresidentelula.blogspot.com/) no qual Marina Silva ficou indignada porque o fotografo Edvaldo Ferreira denunciou o seu vice por desmatar em uma área de preservação ambiental, fiquei me perguntando o que deu nessa senhora. A senadora que saiu do PT por não concordar, segundo ela,  com a política ambiental do governo e das alianças do PT no congresso, se passa agora a fazer o papel de laranja da candidatura de José Serra no Rio e a querer da "carteirada" para proteger seu candidato a vice por ter praticado ações que ela, Marina, sempre condenou. Ou Marina Silva é realmente  ingênua e bem intencionada ou enganou a todos durante todos esses anos.

We may not have a solid estimate of the spill's toll on wildlife until after the oil flow is stopped.

Determining an oil spill’s toll on wildlife is never an easy feat—and the challenging conditions of the current gulf spill make it all the more complicated. While most of the animals collected alive have been visibly covered in oil, the majority of those that have been found dead have had no oil visible on their bodies, making the cause of death difficult to ascertain. According to an official report, of the 1,571 birds, 449 sea turtles, and 54 marine mammals found dead so far, 35 percent, 3 percent, and 6 percent, respectively, clearly had oil on them. “I’ve actually been surprised at the relatively low number of oiled animals being seen so far,” says Michael Ziccardi, director of the Oiled Wildlife Care Network at the University of California, Davis.
